Montana Gem is a 100% family owned and operated business founded by GIA Gemologist Randy Gneiting. Since the early 1900's, the Gneiting family has been involved in Montana mining, including gold mining in the Tabacco Root mountains, copper mining in Butte, followed by nearly 50 years of sapphire mining. For the past 35 years, our focus has been the elusive Yogo Sapphire found in the Little Belt mountains of central Montana.
Randy and Tony currently do the bulk of the mining, with the latest addition to the crew being Jack, age 5. Jack is the 5th generation of family miners.
